This past Saturday, I decided that I was going to do an impromptu Pop Up Shoot for WLHS prom! It’s been 3 years since I graduated from Wilde Lake High School (class of 2016, whoo!). As an alumna, I felt so much nostalgia when I arrivied to Lake Front and saw so many young people dressed their best.
I remember wishing I was able to get better photos of myself on my prom day. I arrived late for photos at Lake Front in 2016 because I was finishing up my dress (a tale for another day!). With that memory in my mind, it filled me with happiness knowing that I’d be able to use my talent to take high quality images for this year’s seniors.
It took me a few minutes to shrug off my shyness and get to work. I started walking about, trying to locate individuals who were already posing for pictures. I snapped most of my shots over the shoulder of family members! I didn't want to get in the way. If I missed the shot, I just kindly asked “Could I take your photo?” and surprisingly always received an enthusiastic yes. After snapping a photo, I was sure I gave my lovely subjects my business card so they knew how to find their photo later. It doesn’t hurt to self promote and gain exposure!
The hardest part about that day was trying to quickly shift between camera settings for individual and group photos. I like shooting at a low aperture for individual shots. However for group shots, I needed to be at a higher aperture to make sure everyone was in focus. It also didn’t help that Lakefront was very crowded so it was hard to get the perfect angle sometimes.
